Question: Hello, I am a 28 year old woman, and since yesterday I have been experiencing random throbbing in the right side of my neck. This summer I was in and out of the hospital for issues regarding disc protrusions interfering with my ability to use my right hand, in addition to not being able to have sensation in my right arm and leg. During this time, I also saw a Vein doctor, worried that some of these issues would be due to a clot, he did an ultrasound on the inside of my legs, and found nothing. I still worry about clots despite that, and I have never experienced something like this before yesterday. Please help. There area is not discolored, isn't hot, and does not hurt constantly but randomly.

It's very unlikely to be a clot .

Detailed Answer:
Hi and Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Sorry ro hear of your sufferings.Your concern is very right and I can understand it, However the problem you described is very unlikely to be a clot for the follwoing resons.
1.Clots formation in veins is very uncommon in health young people who are not bed ridden, or who had not recently any major operation or previous history of blood clotting Or family history of such clots .
2. Even If blood clots do occur they very rarely occur in the neck veins rather common in legs .
3 .Yes , in spite of the above it's still possible to have one , but clot in neck veins do not produce pain or throbing only .It rather causes quite obvious swelling of the upper hand , and neck , it do cause gross distension of the veins of the upper hand and neck .Pain may be there but is not very common and is not intermittent if any.
So it's very unlikely to be a clot .

The causes of this pain or throbing may be many. But keeping your history in mind , muscle spasm or the prolapse discs may be one factor. Some times one can feel the great artery ( espnif nonpain but rather theobing only ) of the neck if the heart races fast as with anxiety or excercise giving a throbing feel.Certain drugs can cause the same .

So to know exactly the cause a proper examination would be best you already have an appointment. but atleast you should be relaxed regarding the clot .

Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. Please don't hesitate to ask anything else you need to know. kind Regards Dr Rahman .
