Hello. I Am A Healthy 24 Year Old Female. I
Question: Hello. I am a healthy 24 year old female. I am a kindergarten teacher and do pickup a lot of germs from my students. I have gotten more sick than usual in my 2 years of teaching. This past Tuesday I became sick with a temp of 101, body aches, chills and sweats all day. Wednesday I felt somewhat better, and then Wed night the fever and chills came back. I also started with swollen tonsils sore throat and congestion. I went to the doctor on Thursday. The test for strep was negative. She said i have some type of infection and put me on amoxicillin. Since then, my fever has not gone away. My congestion and cough are somewhat better today but I had a fever this morning and right now of 101 causing me to have chills and sweats. I am just wondering if it is normal to have a fever last this long. (since Tuesday) and if you think it is just some sort of virus. My other symptoms do seem somewhat better but these fevers are making me feel terrible. Thank you!
Brief Answer:
Please read the following and discuss with your doctor afterward
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,
I can understand your concern.
First, I can assure you that this is a near normal situation in patients that works in places with children or overcrowded.
If you were my patient I would order to do a chest X ray and some blood tests such as Hemogram and CRP.
If the results will be negative than you should continue the current treatment for up to 10 days
If they come positive than the treatment should be changed in another antibiotic.
Please discuss with your doctor for the above
And I also recommend you to do the flu vaccine annually.
Hope to have been helpful
Regards
Dr. Jolanda
