Brief Answer:
Stomach irritation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. The location you are indicating is where the stomach is, so I would suspect that the cold liquids are irritating the stomach. Why your stomach is so irritable is another question; it could be that there is something causing inflammation in the stomach. There could be many causes for this, including medications such as anti-inflammatories (such as Ibuprofen) or alcohol, or there could be a bacteria called H pylori which is causing inflammation. If the pain is bothering you, I would suggest taking a medication such as Pepcid or Prilosec for a week or two and see if that helps, and if so, that would confirm this is coming from your stomach and is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

I take 81mg baby aspirin and 20mg Lipitor daily. Could either of these medications cause my stomach pains?

Brief Answer:
Possibly aspirin

Detailed Answer:
Yes, aspirin can sometimes cause stomach inflammation and even ulcers. Depending on the reason you are taking it, I would talk to your doctor about whether it would be better to stop it, or whether you should try taking an anti-acid medication, such as omeprazole (Prilosec) while you are on it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.

I am not experiencing any heartburn or acid reflux, it’s just a pain that comes after drinking cold liquids. The pain feels like it stops at the top of my rib cage on the right side of my stomach. Can antacids still help?

Brief Answer:
Possibly

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

I can't think of anything else that could possibly cause this, so I would say it is still the most likely cause, even without heartburn or other symptoms. If this is the cause, antacids might help, but Prilosec is a much stronger medication for this and would be more likely to help.

Regards
