Question: Hello, I am highly allergic to penicillin and go into anaphylactic shock when given penicillin as an injection. I've had reactions, some severe, to topical medications with 'cellin' based medications. Is there any "first aid" ointments that I can safely take for minor cuts and injuries?

Brief Answer:
there are some options

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

most cuts and injuries do not require prophylactic antibiotic treatment and I wouldn't recommend taking any without a doctor's prescription. There are some options for allergic individuals. These include trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), Clindamycin and Doxycycline. There is no cross-reactivity between the aforementioned drugs and penicillin. Allergic reactions may occur with any drug but the drugs I've suggested have nothing to do with penicillin allergy.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
