Question: Hello, I am not sure if this could be a neurology related issue but my eyes get extremely dry after sleeping a few hours during night. This does not happen when sleeping during the day. Sometimes when sleeping in the night I also experience slight numbness, tingling in the fingers and thumb. This goes away after I move my hand for a few seconds. I also experience itching in ears some times during the day. Please advise. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Both are minor issues and can be easily treated.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and I would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details. There are two separate problems.

1. Dryness of eyes- it is a local problem in eyes due to poor secretion of tears. You can get an eye check up done. If everything is normal, they would prescribe certain eye drops such as Tears plus, with which it would get better.

2. Numbness and tingling are related to neurological issue. A clinical examination may help to rule out any serious issue. If there is no numbness or weakness during daytime, it may not be serious. While sleeping, nerves in the skin get compressed under our body, leading to numbness and tingling. Vitamin B12 supplements can help.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
