Question: Hello, I am worried about the Coronavirus. I went to give blood yesterday and the technician coughed a few times. None of these coughs were on me. She said she takes her temperature daily and she felt fine but I suffer from health anxiety and have a preexisting condition that went into remission in 2008. What are the chances of getting this from a cough? Is this virus airborne? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Low chances of contamination.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor " service.

I have read your query.

Until now, we know that this coronavirus doesn't spread with air, ( not an airborne virus ).

It spreads mainly with sputum droplets and close contacts with the affected people or contaminated objects.

The minimal distance from person to person should be at least one meter.

in your case, there are chances of infection ( I think low chances), you should be self quarantined, use a facial mask, wash your hands, monitor yourself for temperature, cough, breathing problems, etc.

Eat healthy, use fluids ( tea, etc.).

In case of any symptoms, call your local medical authorities.

Previously health issues may complicate the prognosis if affected, but it is a good thing that you hadn't problems with your lungs or heart in the past.

At your age, even if you will be infected, you should have no problems at the end.

Hope I helped you.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Ok, thank you. I don’t think or know if she is infected or not. As I said she told me they take their temperature everyday. When she coughed she was probably six feet away. It sounded like a dry cough. It was not a really big cough. In my area we have only had reported cases at a nursing home. Unfortunately I am a hypochondriac and fear I will get pneumonia and need a ventilator.
