Question: Hello, I believe I got food poisoning Sunday night. Today is Wednesday and I feel a little better, the major pains have stopped. I took 2 Imodium AD capsules yesterday(Tuesday) however and I haven't been able to have any bowel movements since. I took it to stop the diarrhea because it was really bad. However now my stomach is starting to feel hot again like there is acid and it feels bloated like I i need to have a bowel movement, but I can't. What are my options and recommendations?

Hello, yes I am able to pass flatus and no I'm not having any sharp or dull abdominal pain. Right now, it mainly just feels like nausea and acid indigestion/reflux. The Immodium

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the additional information.
The absence of bowel movements is a side effect of Imodium.
It takes 1-2 days for Imodium to get completely cleared from your system after you stop taking it.
Meanwhile you can take either a stimulant laxative like Bisacodyl or an osmotic laxative like miralax for a bowel movement.

Dr.R.K.

Thank you so much for the follow up!

Just one more question, I have some Milk Of Magnesia which I believe is a saline laxative. Would that work as well or no?

Okay thank you for all your help!

The last thing I just want to mention is that I haven't eaten much of anything. Only just sipping on water and eating Saltine crackers occasionally if I could keep it down. I'm pretty sure that's also why I haven't had a bowel movement in addition to the imodium. But if I'm just having indigestion and bloating, could I also chew antiacid tablets or take pepto bismol? It's only been 3 days since the food poisoning, and although I do feel a little better, I just don't want to make anything worse by taking over the counter medications. What do you suggest?
