Question: Hello,

I did an Ultrasound done in 2011 (regular check up) and the report said I am having grade 1 fatty liver and was asked to reduce weight. Later as a part of regular health check up, I did the abdomen USG in Dec 2015, 2016 & 2017. The Dec 2017 report said “elongated cystic area in the left lobe of the liver measuring 4.0 X 0.8 cm – possibly a simple cyst / prominent vein. No internal change in size & morphology to previous scan dated Dec 2015”. FYI, I have had some left side back pain (radiating to left shoulder backside) & diarrhea few years ago (before 2001) & done my abdomen USG although I dont have report now.

I have some mild pain in left side under the ribs. I am 45 years old man weight 80 Kg and do some less exercises. I unable to reduce my weight for past 6 months. I am non alcoholic person and have stressful routines. My questions – 1) Is the cyst making the pain in my left side under ribs ? 2) What can be done to remove or eliminate the cyst with diet or pills /medicine although there is no pain in my right side but feel uncomfortable at the upper stomach side & have a black spot there ?

Brief Answer:
Simple cyst is painless.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Simple cyst of the Liver is an Incidental finding in Ultrasound abdomen. It doesn't cause pain with that size.
There are no Medicines to treat a Simple cyst.
As per your description, the pain could be due to Acid peptic disease.I prescribe Proton pump inhibitor like Rabeprazole 20mg twice daily before food to my patients with similar complaints.
If the pain doesn't subside, please get CT scan abdomen. It will give more information.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions,I will clarify further.
Wish you good health
