Hello. I Had An MRI Of My Cervical Spine/neck And

Question: Hello. I had an MRI of my cervical spine/neck and it showed a 1.1cm nodule in my lower left thyroid lobe. I then had an ultrasound which shows the same nodule and another 1.6cm nodule in my lower right lobe. My father passed away from esophageal CA (inoperable) and my mother from tracheal CA. I am 59 years old with a history of multiple MRIs and CAT scans due to a rt. vertebral dissection of unknown origin.
Having FNA in 2 weeks but my gut tells me to just have my thyroid removed (whether benign or otherwise).

I sincerely appreciate any and all thoughts on my situation.

Brief Answer:
FNA procedure is necessary to decide proper treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Ultrasound provides very good information about the shape and consistency of thyroid nodules.
Then, to distinguish if the nodule is benign or malign fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is a determinant procedure. The procedure is guided by ultrasound. You can take the diagnostic reports in 24 hours.

The treatment depends on the results.
If the results are benign you may simply do regular check up ultrasounds. You can also take medications that suppress the function of the thyroid.

If the results are malign surgery is very recommended.

So, I would suggest you to be patient and wait FNA results. Then, you can decide for the right treatment depending on the results.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
