Hello, I Had An Accident Yesterday With My Penis. I
Question: Hello, I had an accident yesterday with my penis.
I was using a penis pump and afterwards I applied a constriction ring around the base of my penis. I took it off and put it back on once or twice in order to allow circulation. I know that it is dangerous to keep a ring on for more than 20 minutes.
Unfortunately, I had not received much sleep the night before and wound up taking a nap without removing the ring on my penis. My penis was flaccid when I passed out asleep. I awoke approximately 45 minutes later. When I removed the constriction, I felt numbness in my penis. I shook my penis to regain circulation and the numbness subsided.
This event occurred 20 hours ago. Since then, I've been experiencing a very slight tingling/numbness at the very tip of my penis head. It is a very faint feeling. I am not experiencing any pain or other symptoms. When I removed the ring from my penis, the color of my penis had not changed, nor was it swollen. Everything is the same.
There is a very small mark on my penis head. It could be a blood vessel damaged or something. What I fear is nerve damage and a loss of sensation. I do have nerve damage in my shoulder from sleeping in a bad position and it's been many months and has improved a little but has not gone away.
The reason I am asking this question is not because I am feeling any discomfort or pain. If this sensation existed on any other part of my body, I would not care. But because I feel it in my penis, it makes me anxious. I expect to return to normal soon, but in order to allay my anxiety, I wanted to ask an expert. The feeling is so faint that it's difficult to accurately describe it. I only feel it at the very tip of my penis. When I touch my penis head on different areas, I can feel my finger touching it, so I have sensitivity on my penis head. There are no other symptoms besides this very slight, but noticeable feeling on the tip of my penis.

Brief Answer:
Thanks for using Ask a doctor.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Your anxiety is understandable.
You sure have an injury to the penis, from what you've written.
The severity of the injury needs to assessed by a Urologist,
by a direct examination and usually a test of blood flow,
called colour doppler scanning of the penis.
Since you've concerns about the injury and future erections,
this is an urgent test.
Kindly avoid using penile pumps in future,
as they're known to cause serious complications
like impotence, in many men.
Also, never ever use penile constriction rings to increase
erection rigidity.
Hope your doubts are cleared. Feel free to contact me, if needed.
Wish you well.

Thank you for your reply.
If the injury is minor, will it heal on it's own? Are there medications or treatments that can fix the problem?
I believe that over 24 hours later, that the symptoms have lessened. I hope that this will go away on its own because I don't think my insurance will cover a doppler test.
If I wake up in the morning with an erection, that will be a positive sign, no?
If I could see a urologist soon, I would not ask you these questions. I am just trying to figure out how concerned I should be. I hope that there is a good chance that a few days rest will clear everything up.

Hi,
Again your concern is normal.
It's precisely for getting this information on the doubts raised
by you, that this scan is essential.
An early morning erection by itself doesn't assure future type of erections.
Wishing you well.
