Question: Hello, I have a quick question. I am a Type 1 diabetic who takes Humalog and Lantus. Last night, I can honestly say I do not remember if I took my lantus (night time insulin) prior to me falling asleep. This AM, my sugar levels were elevated which led me to believe I did not. I did take 5 units (half of my usual dosage) at 7:30AM. My question is when I get to my usual time to take lantus which is between 8 and 9 at night, should I only take 5 units and then wait a full 24 hours to take my normal 10 units or should I take my normal 10 units at night knowing I would have 11 hours remaining with the 5 units I took this Morning or how should I treat this?

Brief Answer:
Treat this situation with your morning dosis of Humalog

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

Your mention thay your forget to do your Lantus injection at 8 or 9 PM and consecutivelly you had high blood sugar result at morning.

This situation can be resolves in 2 ways.
1.Do your usual dosis of Lantus in the evening as usual and correct the high blood sugar in the morning with a higher dosis +(2-4UI) of your Humalog.

2.Correct the high fasting blood sugar with your Humalog(increase the morning dosis) and at the same time apply even A small dosis of Lantus ,just to have a basal Insulin coverture during the day .Than in the evening you have to do your regular dosis of Lantus.

Hope this helps.
Best regards.

Ok, but I took 5 units of Lantus this AM, so my question is tonight at 8PM do I take my normal 10 units of Lantus knowing that I took 5 units this morning or do I go a full 24 hours with no Lantus?

Brief Answer:
Take 8UI UI Lantus, only for tonight.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

5UI Lantus is a low dosis for your age and your weight,It is half-dosis for your body needs.

So, today it is probable that you may have blood sugar results higher than usual, even at evening.
Considering this, even if you take 10 UI Lantus ,i don"t think you will have hypoglycemia.
My advice for you :Only for this evening ,you may take 7 or 8UI Lantus and eat a small snack(a fruit for ex.)
Tomorrow evening and on you will taKe your 10 UI Lantus at the same time each night.

Hope i have answered to your question.
Wish you good health.

Thank you very much. I Was worried about taking normal doses. My sugar levels have been actually below normal which makes me think I did take the 10 units last night on top of the 5 units this morning

Just to clarify, if I take 7 units tonight at 9PM or normal time I should not have any issues with low sugar levels? Then take nothing until 9PM tomorrow night like usual?

Brief Answer:
Write and record the dosis of Insulin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
If you had blood sugar test below normal during the day and you think that probably you did 10 UI Lantus ladt nigh, the 5 UI if Lantus in tje morning ate an extra dosis.
This can produce hypo during the day and in thse circumstances it is better to decresse a little bit the dosis of preprandial Insulin(Humalog),accordingly to the preprandial blood sugar results.

In the late evening ,the Lantus that you inject last nigh finnish the effect and you have only the 5UI of the morning injection.
So you can do 7 or 8 UI Lantus(as i said earlier) and eat a small snack before you sleep.

You will not have hipoglicemia during the night if you eat smth before you go to sleep but for the future i suggest to record /write immediately before you do the injection, the dosis of insulin and your Diabetes numbers ,in order to avoid these history and take control of your Diabetes today!

Hope i have clarified your doubts.
Wish you all the best.
