Question: Hello,
I have been experiencing swollen face and fingers and wrist. I have got blood test done and my eosinophil is 9 percent and AEC count is 820. I was prescribed by my doctor to use Fexofenadine Hydrochlorode and Montelukast Sodium tablets. But I don't have asthma and I don't have any allergic symptoms other like runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. Can i continue using this tablet? I need help. This is just for my clarification as I couldn't contact my doctor as of now and I have taken 4 doses already .
Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Yes,you should continue with the drugs prescribed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi karrasrisurya1994,
Thank you for the query.I understand your concern.
* I feel raised eosinophill count&AEC clearly indicates allergic state..Eosinophils are type of white blood cells..which are increased due to allergic reaction..
* Though cold, sneezing, asthma are common respiratory symptoms of allergy..swelling or itching of eyes, extremities also manifest as severe allergy.(like , some food, medicine or chemical fumes)
* So I would advise to continue with the medicines prescribed..they are antiallergic drug & histamine blockers...which combat & control allergic symptoms. Mostly you would be alright with it...At the same time ...

* Also keep a watch for any increase in symptoms swelling in tongue, lips.,itching with hives,, breathing trouble with tightness in chest...&consult treating doctor or go to ER for injectable treatments.
Drink lot of water, eat normal food that you digest very well...avoid any new thing in food or use.
I hope that helps you. Any follow up query is welcome

Thanks for your response. I will continue with prescription. I was a bit worried as i do not have any given allergies like runny nose, itchy eyes and asthma. But do I need to follow any SFED diet as i saw on internet like eliminating milk products, soy, wheat and nuts. As I am vegetarian I won't eat fish and eggs.
My prescription is for 15 days. Do I need to do anything else in lifestyle changes to get my AEC count normal?
Thanks in advance

Detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Karrasrisurya 1994,
Thanks for follow up query.
SFED is to detect food allergy causing Eosinophilic Esophagitis ..an allergy manifestation of allergy. As you don't show any other common manifestation of allergy..it's essential to exclude/confirm EOE for selecting proper continuation of treatment of allergy.
So please continue with the diet..to help the future management (to prevent further recurrence of allergy.)
Apart from this,as I had suggested earlier you can keep an eye on symptoms & note any aggravation after intake of certain food you eat..&inform it to your treating doctor.
I hope that helps. For any more information you need,I am eager to help you.

Thanks

Thanks for your response. I got another doubt a when i accidentally got to see a formula for calculating AEC value like (WBC count * Eosinophil percent) / 100.
But according to that formula my AEC value is 738. But in the report it is 820. Do I need to check with concerned lab technician or is that correct? As they have taken adequate amount of blood and tested. Please clarify my doubt. Also I have a question that how do I know if I have eosinophilia or not as I am experiencing few symptoms and AEC count and eosinophil percent on higher side. I have experiencing this issue since some months and no new symptoms as my swelling becoming regular I felt there is a need for chekup.
Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Detailed answer below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Karrasrisurya1994,
Thanks for the follow upquery.
1. Yes the formula you said&the calculations are correct...the report seems to be incorrect to some extent...but it's not so much to alter your grade of severity of Eosinophilia&the conclusion drawn will not alter with the figure reported. If you want to get satisfied...you can meet the person&get your report corrected.
* The normal range of AEC is 450 to 550 cells /micro litre....
a) Mild Eosinophilia is between AEC550 to 1500 cells/micro litre....Both of your reports are in this catagory.
The possible basic cause in your case could be Eosinophilic Esophagitis(for detecting it you are prescribed SFED diet..as explained earlier)/atopic dermatitis or worm infestations.
b) moderate Eosinophilia is between AEC range 1500 to 5000 cells/micro lit.
c) Severe Eosinophilia shows AEC. more than 5000 cells/microlit.
I hope ..my point is clear to you now.Any more information you need..please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
If you are satisfied...please don't forget to grade the answer before you close your query.
