Hello! I Have Health Anxiety And I Noticed A Whitish
Question: Hello! I have health anxiety and I noticed a whitish ridge of skin near the back opening of my vagina. I’ve attached an image with the area circled. I only noticed it because I was doing a skin check on myself. I was last at the gynecologist seven months ago. The area does not itch or bleed at all and it is not hard. Do you know what it may be? I’m terrified it could be cancer of the vulva...
I’d like to add that the ridge area is lighter in color and cannot be scraped off, such as a fungal
Infection could be. I did have an episiotomy 22 years ago with the birth of my son, and this ridge like area runs from the back opening of my vagina diagonally downward in the direction of my anus....could it possibly be a scar or scar
Tissue from that?

Also...the redder area you see is just irritation from my fingernails in trying to see the spot...
....or vestibular papillomatosis? (Yes, I’ve been googling these things lol!?

Hi,
Welcome to Ask a Doctor.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
I have seen the image uploaded and read your concerns.
This is not vestibular papillomatosis. This is not cancer.
The ridge area is just above the anus, isnt it?
To me it appears like just a normal variation of skin colour
Do you have any other depigmented areas on the vulva? If so see a dermatologist and get a biopsy done.
It is definitely nothing serious.
Have you been regular with your pap tests? If it is due, get it done.
Best wishes.

Hello Doctor! Thank you so much for your answer! I had my last Pap smear in July of last year and it was normal. There are no other depigmented areas. And yes, the area is near the anus, probably halfway between the posterior part of vagina and anus.
I’m attaching another picture I took today....unfortunately you’ll see that I’ve irritated the area so it was bleeding a bit. I honestly had a hard time seeing that same area as what I circled yesterday....but there is also another area I’ve circled on the current picture....is that anything concerning? I do plan on making an appt to visit my gynecologist just to have it checked out...
Thank you again!

I’m not sure, but the area circled on the picture from today may be the same as the circled area on the prior picture...?

Hi,
Welcome back.
The circled area in the picture from today appears to be the same as the circled area in the prior picture.
I do not see anything of concern there. I feel it is just a normal variation. Do you have any itching in that area? You have written that you have irritated the area. So I am asking. If you have itching, you may apply antifungal ointment.
Best wishes

Hello again! No, there is no itching in the area at all. I was also thinking...back in 2017 I had an anal
Skin tag removed by a colorectal surgeon. I cannot recall exactly where it was located but I believe it was moreso on my right side. Is that circled area on the peritoneum and could it possibly be remnants from the tag removal, or it would that have been closer to the anus? Thank you again!

Hi,
Welcome back.
Circled area on the perineum could possibly be the remnants of skin tag removal. The skin around anus is loose. So it may appear so.
Best wishes.
