Hello. I Have Moderate Active Ulcerative Colitis And Am Being

Question: Hello. I have moderate active ulcerative colitis and am being treated regularly by a GI where I live (New York). I would like a second opinion.

I had a flare early this year and was put on Uceris (9mg budesonide) in addition to my existing Lialda & Rowasa. The Uceris knocked down the flare by about 85% but never fully. I have been on the Uceris for about 5 months now, and I think my body has adjusted to it. The flare has come back, and my Dr has just given me a prescription for prednisone 50mg/day. I am wondering if I should continue taking the Uceris together with the prednisone, or stop the Uceris and switch to the prednisone? I am somewhat worried that stopping the Uceris suddenly could shock my body, but my GI suggested I just make a switch (stop Uceris, start prednisone). What do you think?

Brief Answer:
Both are same group of medicine you have to take only one.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details,
Uceris is Budesonide which is a steroid as well as prednisolone is also a very potent corticosteroids.
50mg/day of prednisolone itself is a very heavy dose and there is no sense of taking two steroids in heavy doses at the same time..It's just like adding White sugar and brown sugar to same cup of coffee.....Both are meant to treat U.C but as your doctor wants to switch you over to prednisolone do it.Don't worry flare up won't occur as you are being shifted from a weak to potent steroid.
Hope I was clear and easy to understand.
