Hello. I Have Noticed Bilateral Bands/lumps On Back Between Bottom

Question: Hello. I have noticed bilateral bands/lumps on back between bottom of the rib cage and above the pelvis. They are tender and in the same spot on each side of my back. They are not getting bigger. They have been the same size for 3-4 months now. Could they be trigger points/muscle knots? I have been very stressed lately, sitting at a desk all day at work with pretty poor posture. Is there anything that can help get rid of them if that is what they are? What else could it be? They are bilateral so i dont think they are tumors. They are like taut bands.

Hi there
Thanks for the query
Have you had any backpain which aggravates on bending forward or lifting heavy objects?
How was your sleep been affected?
Does these tender spots on the back get softer after a hot shower?
From what you said appears that they could be muscle knots which are regions of muscle spasm in your back muscles. Pressing on them can feel tender and a massage may relieve them.
I suggest you take an appointment with a Physiotherapist who will be able to assess these knots and possibly massage them out.
The other common cause could be localised benign fat swellings which are not of concern and less likely at the same points bilaterally.
Please do let me now the answers to the questions above after which I will be in a better position to help you.

My muscles are very tight while bending forward. As far as lifting heavy objects, I am staying away from that at this point as I don't want to aggravate them more than they already are. I am trying to stretch as much as I can. It seems as if the lumps are subcutaneous and no deeper than that, which makes me think muscle knots. I do sleep somewhat well, but when I do wake up to turn to the other side, it seems to be a little bit bothersome, but not terrible. The "bands" go from the back and wrap around to the side. I can feel them when I press down. Can they contract the muscles that much? I was also recently constipated pretty bad as well, so could I have gotten these knots from straining?
I just want to make sure these are not anything to worry about. Other than massage, could you suggest any other helpful tips to relax these knots?
Thanks for your help.

These bands could represent pain due to pinched nerves in the back or could be due to a skin infection like Herpes which can present with band like burning pain. It likely appears to be muscle and nerve related though.
I don't believe straining would cause these symptoms however bending forward could aggravate tense muscles in the back.
Application of moist heat should help relieve the tight muscles by improving blood supply. You can use heating pads or cloth wet with warm water taking care not to burn the skin. Even hot showers can help with the same precaution.
A physiotherapy session should be very helpful in making things clearer I suggest.
