default
Posted on Sun, 20 Oct 2019
Question: Hello. I hit the occipital part of my head two days ago. I did not experience any LOC. I have not had any severe headaches, difficulty concentrating or changes in vision. My pupils are normal. I am still having pain over the "goose egg" that formed. Should I be worried? When will the pain over the goose egg go away?

Brief Answer:
At the moment you do not need to worry- the pain should take a few days to a couple of weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Local trauma may cause damage to the tissues and as a result pain. Both the swelling and the pain may generally last from a few days to a couple of weeks.

In your case, knowing the exact trauma (what exactly happened) would provide us with more information to evaluate you.
On the other hand, because you did not have any loss of consciousness, no severe headaches, no problems with concentration and vision and you do not mention any other neurological signs (weakness or numbness in any leg or arm), no problem with speech, and your pupils are normal, then it is unlikely the trauma caused any other damage than the skin and the other soft tissues in the area.

Also, the first two days are the most critical ones in head trauma, so if you are not having important symptoms so far very likely you are going to be fine.

I would say that as long as you have none of the neurological symptoms mentioned above, you do not need to worry. You will need to keep an eye on it, you may take pain killers to help with the pain (paracetamol and ibuprofen). Cold compresses are not helpful after the first day.

If you notice any worsening of the pain in the area or you develop any new neurological symptoms, you will need to see the doctor. This is very unlikely but I mention it to be cautious.

To conclude:
- giving some more information on the trauma would help us understand the kinetics behind it and how serious it was
- on the other hand, the lack of serious symptoms makes it unlikely that serious injuries have happened
- you may use pain killers and keep an eye on your symptoms
- pain and swelling may last a few days to a couple of weeks
- if there is any worsening or any new symptoms you will need a visit with the doctor soon

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
