Question: Hello. I want to know if someone can have Liver Disease with normal liver enzymes. I have non alcoholic fatty liver disease with normal liver enzymes. I got my blood work results today and my enzymes are normal. I have been drinking heavy for about 2 weeks before the test but I have drank maybe 15 US standard drinks a day for 2 weeks. Is it possible that my NAFLD has progressed into Hepatitis but my enzymes remain normal?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Fatigue nausea and vomiting,Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially on the upper right side beneath your lower ribs (by your liver),Clay-colored bowel movements,Loss of appetite,nausea,Low-grade fever,Dark urine,Joint pain are some of the initial symptoms of hepatitis or any type of inflammation in liver.
If there is inflammation the sore cells of liver would start seeping enzymes and their levels would be deranged definitely.
laboratory analysis is a part of diagnosis but most important indicator of disease are it's symptoms.
So NAFLD progressed into Hepatitis or some other problem with normal enzyme levels is not possible.
Rest assured fatty liver is a very common finding above age of 30.
You have nothing.
You are perfectly fine.
Hope I was helpful.

As an alcoholic trying to sober up I would like to know what is a low risk amount of alcohol consumption for a day? So that NAFLD does not progress to Hepatitis? How many drinks can someone have a day without risking further damage. Also, should one take rests between drinking days and if so, how many? If one drinks everyday for 5,6,7 days at a time how many days should be taken off with no alcohol?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for follow up my dear patient,
Moderate amount of alcohol around 300ml a day.Depends on the brand malt and refining process used for example
For e.g if you are having Brands like Delamore trinitas the quantity could be increased while if you are having something like Chevas(Excellent choice for daily use) 330 ml is enough and safe in long runs.
Yes if you can take rest then try taking alcohol 3 times a week. This would help your liver to rejenuvate and heal naturally.
You can take one drink continuously(Personal suggestion prefer single malt).

Some suggestions which would prove very helpful-
-Take anti oxidants capsule daily.
-Silibinin, also known as silybin, is the major active constituent of silymarin, a standardized extract of the milk thistle seeds, containing a mixture of flavonolignans consisting of silibinin, isosilibinin. It should be taken two times a day.Its a very potent liver rejenuvator and is very effective in maintaining liver healthy.
So take sylimarin daily.

Ayurvedic(Herbal) tablet Liv 52 should be taken once daily(Amazon it-just to help).

Hope i was clear cut and easy to understand,

Detailed Answer:
Hello again dear,
3 to 4 shots a day are ok.
44 multiplied by 4 =176 ml.
You would get high as well as would not cause much damage to your liver.
Thank you.
