Question: Hello. I'm a 64-year-old male. In May this year I had a fall and broke my elbow. Since then, me legs have become worse. I have much difficulty getting out of bed, chairs and lounge chairs. I have difficulty with steps and climbing curbs and it's almost impossible if there's nothing to hold on to. Two days ago, I had another fall and hurt my ribs. I saw my GP and she said to take anti-inflammatory medication. Since then, the muscular condition has become much better. My doctors don't know what is wrong with me and I've been to chiropractors and physiotherapists. I realise that I can't continue to take anti-inflammatories forever but thought that this might give you a clue to my ailment.

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritic changes likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From your symptoms it seems that your joints have undergone osteoarthritic changes. These are basically age related degenerative changes in the weight bearing joints like knee and is characterized by joint pain and stiffness. Upon movement the stiffness gradually relives. Sometimes application of hot pads can make the movement possible.
Life style modifications like avoiding stairs, squatting, sitting cross legged & cycling will also help in reducing your symptoms. Reducing weight is of prime importance if you are overweight. If the pain is severe, you can take few doses of NSAID's (Ibuprofen) or physiotherapic modalities like IFT to relieve your pain.
It is suggested to add calcium supplements 500mg each twice daily. This will take care of your mild symptoms in 3-5 days.
The treatment options include pain killers, hot fomentation, lubricating agents like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin , dycerin, etc and some life style modifications and physiotherapy.
Some investigations needed are Serum B12 and Serum Vit D levels and start supplements according to the levels.
I hope this answers your query.
