Question: Hello,

I’ve recently gone through a tough stretch as a hypochondriac as you can see if you see my question history. A few weeks ago I developed a huge fear of schizophrenia because I had a XXXXXXX vu/mind pop moment and searched it and saw schizophrenia as a cause. I’m a 26 year old male with no history of issues like that, but my anxiety caused me to fear it. This caused insomnia that I often go through as well.

I’ve gotten a bit better in the last few days, but I am having an experience related to sleep that I wanted to ask about and ease my mind on.

For many years now when I close my eyes to fall asleep, within a minute I start to experience what I call jumble brain. I’m still very much awake during this as I can open my eyes and be completely awake. But during this time I experience things like random scenes I can see in my mind that make no sense, random images, jumbled thoughts that make no sense, and the most worrisome, voices that could be from people I know to random people playing in my mind saying nonsensical things. To be clear these voices are in my mind as I try to go to sleep, I don’t physically hear them and I know they aren’t real.

But they’re still annoying and when I’m anxious they cause stress and bad sleep as I often open my eyes and try to restart going to sleep anytime I catch myself having jumble brain.

Is this common or normal or is it something to be worried about related to schizophrenia or something serious.

Brief Answer:
These symptoms could be related to underlying anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back with additional details.

I have noted your clinical details and would like to reassure that these are not suggestive of schizophrenia or any other psychotic illness. These are most probably related to anxiety. Once your anxiety improves and sleep quality/quantity are better, these symptoms should subside.

Best wishes,
