Question: Hello. My 17 yo daughter snores and mouths breathes. These are not new symptoms. She also suffers from allergies. She is not overweight and takes a daily Zyrtec. Could her adenoids be causing her snoring-mouth breathing? She has had multiple issues with strep throat in the past and a tonsil abscess-but not in the last 3 years. Should she see her normal Nurse Practitioner or an ENT?

Brief Answer:
Visiting ENT doctor is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service. I read your query and here is my advice.

I think her problem of snoring and mouth breathing comes from enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Also the allergy makes the situation worse.
I think she needs to visit an ENT doctor and do a nasopharynoscopy where the nose and pharynx are seen with a light tube and camera to see the conditions of adenoids, tonsils and mucosal lining.
Probably she may need to remove the adenoids (adenoidectomy) and tonsils too.

Hope I have answered the question.
