Hello, My Serum Calcium In 2020 And 21 Is 10.3

Question: Hello, My serum calcium in 2020 and 21 is 10.3 (10.3 is the maximum normal at this lab). A separate PTH test was taken at my request (with calcium) and again my calcium is 10.3. My corresponding PTH was 20. This makes me a true corner case. My GP says

I am somewhat relieved.

During this period I have taken 2500 IU/day of Vit D3. It is in my Joint Flex supplement. I read where to effect your calcium levels you need to take much more than that. Or, would cutting his in half possibly shave 0.1 off?

What is your take on the possibility of cancer caused Hypercalcemia? It seems from what I can tell the "hot spot" for this is with serum calcium around 10.5-11.5 with a PTH around 20 and below. Me being this close to both of these these numbers has me spooked.

regarding parathyroid is along the lines of what I was gathering from the literature but with 20 being pretty low that seems a remote possibility at best. It is the proximity to the cancer numbers that has me reaching out.

Thank you again.

Brief Answer:
You result are within the range.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

YOu have borderline high calcemia. You result are at the higher limit of the range in both cases.
At the other side you have normal PTH level(the normal range for a parathyroid hormone (PTH) blood test is 14 to 65 pg/mL.)

Your supplement with Vit D can slightly increase the absorbtion of calcium in your body but the studies show that this supplement do not cause hypercalcemia. In tis case you will have a very high level of calcium and PTH in your bloodstream ans symptoms like Weakness,Feeling very tired, weigh loss without any reason , Osteoporosis, Kidney stones and (of course ) a lump in your neck

The possibility of cancer with your results is very very low,if you do not have familiar hystory of hyperparathyroidism or multiple endocrime neoplasia.

My advice is to discuss your suspected diagnosis with your local doctor.Apart the physical exam,Parathyroid and calcium test it is necessary to do even some imageric test like neck ultrasound ans possibly a sestamibi scan.
The results of all the test will determine the definitive diagnosis(if you have a parathyroid mass.

Hope this is helpful.
Wish you good health.
