Question: Hello. This is a 1 lead ecg. At the time I felt extreme heaviness and an uneasiness in my chest. I was completely still when this was done. Is this normal looking? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Appears to be a normal EKG

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'.

Overall I would say this EKG strip is normal, I can see all the normal features, however, there is some bumpiness to part of it that I would normally attribute to motion artifact. If you were completely still, it may be due to the quality of the machine taking the EKG. It might be good to have a formal 12 lead EKG. But overall I would say there are no concerns from what I can see.

Your symptoms would be concerning, however, if you had risk factors for heart disease (depending on your age, gender, and other medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes) then even with a normal EKG it might be concerning. But if you are low risk (young, female), most likely it wouldn't be anything from the heart.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.

Thank you for your response. I was absolutely still, and one of the things that made me question this was that my daughter was using this and hers looked totally different from mine. My QRS is way taller and she didn’t have the waves, hers was straight (other than the usual p wave and t), and her ST wasn’t dipped down. My mom told me when I was telling her how weird it was, that my maternal grandfather had a sudden cardiac arrest when he was about 40, and he was an active, healthy runner. So I think that is what is feeding my anxiety about this!

Brief Answer:
Echocardiogram

Detailed Answer:
I see. It is hard to say exactly why your daughter's looks different unless I can look at it, everyone's EKG is going to look different (and even the same person can have different EKGs at different times because of lead placement and other factors), but there are basic characteristics that we look at to determine if anything is concerning or not, and I didn't see anything that concerned me on yours. However, with a family history of sudden cardiac arrest, it may be reasonable to get an echocardiogram to confirm everything looks normal, I would suggest discussing this with your doctor to see what they think about that.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help any way I can.
