Question: Hello! This question pertains to my 17 year old son. He has very good dental health and visits a dentist regularly. For about two years now he has experienced a popping sensation on the left side of his jaw when he closes his mouth. When he opens his mouth he does not have full range of motion and has to shift his lower mandible to the right in order to open his mouth fully. All of his dental X-rays have shown no particular issues with his temperomandibular joint, however his dentist did suspect his bite may be off, with his upper front teeth not far enough in front of his lower bottom teeth when closing down. As a result we have seen an orthodontist and he is currently using Invisalign orthodontics. Do you have any idea what is causing his issue and do you feel it could be a result of his improper bite? Also, he is about five months done with three months left of the Invisalign treatment and is still experiencing the issue. Do you feel the problem will be resolved once the orthodontic treatment is fully completed? Thank you very much!!

Brief Answer:
Yes it can be one of the cause and might reduce after treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for writing in.

As per the chief complaint, it clearly looks like a case of TMJ disorder and I would like to ask did you get his CBCT scan done and checked by oral surgeon. CBCT scan will give clear pictures as x-rays are only two dimensional.
Moreover, in terms of orthodontic treatment, improper bite can lead to TMJ disorder. So, it might help to reduce the problem. After 5 months, if he feels his bite has improved and their is slight change is his main problem then you are on the right track.
Please wait till the completion of treatment and also get the scan done and consult an oral surgeon and I’m sure things will get better.

Hope I answer your query.

Wishing you good health.

Kind Regards
Dr. Neha Sumra
