Hello, Two Days Ago My Throat Became Sore But Almost

Two days ago my throat became sore but almost felt more like it was dry or like sandpaper than really sore. I didn’t think much of it because it was my only symptom. When I woke up today and it was still sore I checked inside my throat and saw a white dot in the back of my throat on the side that is more sore. I am prone to getting strep throat so I called my doctor. He has prescribed me amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day. Overall I feel better than I normally do with strep throat but my stomach is feeling a little off today and I’m a little tired. My doctor said I should also go for a Covid test and that kind of stressed me out.
The Covid numbers in our area are very low. We live in a city of around 150,000 people and we only have 8 active cases that have been reported, none are currently in hospital. We are all required to wear masks in all indoor spaces like stores, etc. I have been very careful and not spending much time with people outside our social bubble (of 6 people) unless we are outdoors.
I am wondering if my symptoms do sound more like strep throat than Covid? Would you get white spots in your throat with Covid? I know I have had the spots before when I’ve had strep throat. Maybe my doctor is just being cautious by having me take a Covid test. I am an anxious type of person so this has me a bit worried now
Probably strep throat.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Your symptoms seem to be related to tonsillitis which is an infection of the tonsils.
The white dot on the back of the throat is more likely to be related to strep throat. It is commonly related to a bacterial infection.
Covid 19 patients in my daily practice have a sore red throat.
I think that your doctor is being cautious and I agree with him at this point.
I suggest to continue using Amoxicillin which is the right treatment to treat the infection.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards!
