Question: Hello. When I was pregnant, during my 6 month of pregnancy until now, I started experiencing something I never did before. ( I have no previous health conditions). .. at night when done eating a few hours later, I experience severe pain in my chest/upper stomach that goes straight thru my back. It feels like a heart attack or if I'm about to die from the pain. Sometimes it's hard to breathe also. The pain in worsened if I try to lay on either side or even my back. Sometimes I also vomit, and the only thing that seems to ease the pain 1% is taking hot showers, then sometimes I also get chills. I was told maybe it's a gas issue, but when I burp or pass gas the pain still remains. The ironic part is the pain doesn't happen in the day, it usually will start at 2am .And EVERYTIME this pain comes it lasts 8 hours! All I do is cry :(

Brief Answer:
Reflux of stomach acid into food pipe

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) Pregnancy is a condition where in the food pipe (esophagus) and stomach junction becomes lax and leads to reflux of acidic content of stomach back into food pipe which causes gastritis or burning of food pipe by acid.

2) This leads to severe pain as you described and lasts as long as reflux lasts.

3) This is nothing to do with passing of gas and relief. This is mainly to do with reflux of stomach acid back into food pipe.

4) This need to be treated with combination of powerful antacids as well as syrups. Please see a gastroenterologist for the same.

5) Pregnancy is a condition due to which such problems increase and pushing of stomach by growing womb leads to exacerbation of problems.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Thank you for your reply. You say it's acid reflux. But I never have heart burn,. So do you think it's acid reflux or gastritis?
And can you suggest any medicine's?
I don't have health care, so seeing a doctor cost me too much I'm currently out of work :(

Brief Answer:
Sleep with inclination head slightly upper side

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is acid reflux. Severe form of gastritis. Take antacid available over the counter for a month morning and evening before food and see if it reduces.
While sleeping at night, sleep little inclined with head end slightly up to reduce reflux.

I thank you so much! Is it normal to have headaches with acid reflux? And is it safe to take baking soda capsules, I read that it's very good for acid reflux. I tried taking baking soda mixed with water but I'm unable to drink it,. Any advice on that? I rather do something natural as I'm breastfeeding. What do u suggest? Thank you again so much

Brief Answer:
Antacids help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You are right. It is common to have headache with acid reflux. Baking soda capsules may not help you much. No need to drink if you dont like it. You need to take antacids as i adviced previously.
