Hello Again, Dr. XXXXXXX My Wife Visited The Orthopedist About

Question: Hello again, Dr. XXXXXXX My wife visited the orthopedist about her knee pain, and he compared the MRI and X-ray. He said the situation is not severe enough to warrant surgery, but recommends therapy for 6 weeks and possibly a steroid injection in 3 weeks since the cortisone shot in January didn't help. Apparently her pain is worsened by that ruptured baker's cyst that is leaking, which he said will eventually stop. How long does it take for that cyst to heal and end the cause of pain? Several more weeks or months? She is especially uncomfortable moving in bed. Thank you.

If another doctor can give me insights into this subject instead that would also be fine. Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Any effusion will take few weeks to recover
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
In my opinion, whenever there is effusion inside body cavity, and the effusion stops, then its fluid gets re-absorbed by 3 weeks or more. If it is not infected, then it may heal completely or there maybe formation of fibrous tissue (due to any inflammation).
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you Dr. Punj. My wife's knee discomfort has been going on since January, with a lateral meniscus tear and associated Grade 3-4 arthritis. She doesn't know when the cyst began, but is very concerned when it will end, since it is now over 2 months. She is also concerned about the effect of favoring the other leg. The doctor offers her the steroid injection at the end of April since the cortisone shot in January had no effect. How does this picture seem to you? She plans to start therapy.
Brief Answer:
It is all about inflammation in the joint
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
This whole scenario seems to be related to inflammation in the joint which could also be secondary to an infection. I will suggest a synovial fluid analysis of the joint fluid.
There can be may ways to control the inflammation. I am suggesting some as follows:
- Pain-killers
- Steroid injections (this can worsen problem if infection is present in knee). Therefore a synovial fluid analysis will be helpful rule out infection.
- Hyaluronic acid (as injection), provides cushioning
- Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements
If the above doesn't work then surgical options.
