Question: Hello and thank you for taking my question. Does the medical community believe that the medication commonly called Namenda (Memantine) still helpful for treating those with Alzheimer's or is it doing nothing for someone close to the last stage of this disease? Thanks.
Brief Answer:
Yes Memantine is still in
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes medical community still believes that Memantine is atleast slightly more more efficacious than no medicine or placebo and is also safe in controlling symptoms of moderate to severe Alzheimer's Disease.
It has been shown to control most of the symptoms and doesnot worsen negative symptoms.
Since in research the effect size was small, so we are not expecting great improvement in clinical symptoms with its use.
Hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
