Hello Doctor How Does Someone Treat Dandruff?
Shampoos that may help and further bits of advice given below
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,
Dandruff is a very common problem and many over the counter treatments are available.
I would recommend you to first try "Head and Shoulders" shampoo as it contains Pyrithione zinc which helps against dandruff.
Other alternatives are shampoos with coal tar. These can control the rate of the scalp's cell-death and flake.
Lastly, ketoconazole shampoo can be used if the above two groups do not help enough.
You will need to use one of these (try the Head and Shoulders first) every 1-2 days till you see an effect and then you may use it 2-3 times a week. If one shampoo fails to give you the effect you like in a couple of weeks try the next one.
If your hair is dry you may need to use a hair conditioner as well to prevent scaling due to dry skin. Avoid harsh rubbing of the scalp with fingers or towels but just gently massage your scalp when applying the shampoo and live it on your scalp for a few minutes before you rinse it off.
I hope this answers your query and is helpful to you.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
