Question: Hello. my name is Tina and I am a 34 year old female. In XXXXXXX 25th, I started my menstrual cycle and it ended 6-7 days later as usual. But this cycle was different from any of my other ones. the blood was mostly bright red and very heavy, at times there were dark clots which I thought to be normal. but Yesterday, July 8th, I have started to have some light bleeding as if my period wants to start for a second time in a month. Is that normal? what are the potential problems that may be going on there? I may have also lost some weight but not sure. feel a bit light headed probably for loss of blood. this has never happened to me before and I am not sure if they are both periods or I am bleeding for other reasons or underlaying illness's. I'm really worried. Sincerely, Tina

Brief Answer:
Mild bleeding between periods is generally due to ovulation and not worrisome- further explanations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

I'm doctor Antoneta. I read your query and here is my advice:

Sometimes women may have some spotting in between periods when they ovulate but this is only spotting and only for one day. In your case, because the bleeding is light and you are bleeding right between the periods, very likely this is related to ovulation.

On the other hand, if you notice that there is increased bleeding or it lasts more than 1-2 days, you may need to have a visit with your doctor. In this case, you will need a vaginal examination that will guide further needed tests.

If you have not had a pap smear in the last 1-2 years it may be recommended to have one done.

Also, a transvaginal ultrasound may be indicated in some cases, depending on the findings in physical examination.

To conclude:

- mild bleeding in between periods may happen in some cases and is generally related to ovulation, it is not worrisome and no specific treatment is needed

- if the bleeding lasts more than 2 days or is heavy (like a period), this is not bleeding related to ovulation and a gynecological visit is needed

- Many times the bleeding outside of the periods is dysfunctional in nature (due to hormonal changes) and is not worrisome but structural changes need to be ruled out first so a pap smear and transvaginal ultrasound may be ordered.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
