Question: Hello, my name is XXXXXXX I am a 58yo XXXXXXX XXXXXXX male. I am 6ft 176lbs.My last bp reading was 112/64. I have no major health issues. I take no perscription meds. I do take fish oil, glucosamine & condrotin and turmeric. I workout 4-5 days a week. I don't smoke and consume very little alcohol. My problem is that I get this pain in my left greater trochanter area when I lay down. I can workout, stretch, run ,jump, play basketball and have no pain during or after. I want to say that the pain is almost exclusively when I lay down. it starts out gradually then it increases. It goes down my thigh and sometimes into my lower leg. It seems to bother me less if I lay on my back or on my right side. About half the time I get a sharp pain in my left glut. I don't have any numbness or tingle. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Great trochanteric pain syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to "Ask a doctor service" . I read your query and here is my advice.

You are describing such a pain that is exactly characteristic of great trochanteric pain syndrome, pain, tenderness on great trochanter in laying position. It is a combination of bursitis and tendinitis of gluteus minimus and medium which attached around hip joint.
Different conditions can cause this pain which can be trauma, injuries, repetitive movement, vigorous exercises, sport injuries. Osteoarthritis of lumbar spine and hip can put pressure on it and contribute on the situation.
If you visit your physician he may do a physical examination and tests to verify it. Also an MRI can be done.
You can use antinflamatory drugs such advil or naproxen for pain.
Also talk to your doctor about using physical therapy.

Hope I have answered the question.
