Hello My Name Is XXXXXXX And I Have A Dental
Question: Hello my name is XXXXXXX and I have a dental question. I have a mouthpiece that I have been using since February 2019. I had been cleaning it with a little toothpaste and dry it out thoroughly before returning it to the container after each use. At the end of the week I would sterilize it with peroxide or a little mouthwash. As of late I haven’t been using it because of a bitter metallic taste that’ it’s been leaving in my mouth. I had a dental appointment on September 4; 2019. But what can I use to pull this horrible taste out of my mouth? I have been rinsing my mouth constantly with water and been spitting out my saliva a lot. I know it’s my mouthpiece for sure because when I didn’t use it the taste was gone. So I used it for one last time for a hour and the horror taste is back. The mouthpiece cost me $400 from the dentist . So what can I do to get rid of the taste?
Brief Answer:
Avoid using mouthwash for mouthguard
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in.
This metallic taste is due to mouth wash. When you use mouthwash for prolonged time it results in staining of teeth and metallic taste. Since you have cleaned it with mouthwash so it might be giving you metallic taste for the same reason.
Ideally, you should use hydrogen peroxide or soap and water to clean it. You can try to clean it with soap and water. If it still comes back then you might need to get a new one.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Wishing you a good health.
Thanks

Good morning Dr. Sumra...I remembered that I was using my electric toothbrush to clean the mouth guard and though I rinsed it with water the metallic taste was on my toothbrush too. So I used my Waterpik toothbrush this morning and no metallic taste in my mouth this morning. Though I’m nervous about using the mouth guard again I decided to get a replacement and not use mouthwash to clean it. Thank you for your advice! I truly appreciate it!
Brief Answer:
Getting a new one is the best option
Detailed Answer:
Good morning dear,
You have chosen the best option and in future never use mouthwash for more than 15 days, and never use it for cleaning.
Have a good day.
Thanks
