Hello, Over The Past Few Weeks I Have Noticed A

Question: Hello, over the past few weeks I have noticed a change in my bowel movements. I used to poop in the morning; one large poop - on occasion maybe two. Now I have been having lots and lots of poops and they are softer than normal. I do not feel constipated in any way or bloated or like there is anything else weird with my digestion. I try to eat lots of veggies and Whole Foods throughout the day. The only other symptom I am having is pain in my thumb joint. I did overuse the digit; but rest and massage do not seem to be getting it. And at the beginning of all of this I think I woke up in the middle of the night with an attack of gout in my toe. Are these things related? Is there anything I can do with diet to alleviate these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Change diet gradually.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query,
Have seen your details and i appreciate your concerns,
Too much of any thing is good for nothing.... "I try to eat lots of veggies and Whole Foods throughout the day" See our body is a complex system and any change made in this closed entity is accepted very slowly by body. For e.g if a person is taking a junk based diet for last 3 years suddenly changes to clean diet then the body won't digest the food properly...Hence any change should be done gradually(let the body adapt listen to your body and give it some time to adapt to changes).Secondly lots of veggies etc are good but an ideal adult diet should consist of 30-40 gram of fibers at the max(otherwise fibers would laxate the stools).
Follow a diet with 50% complex carbohydrates 30% protein and 20% fats in which saturated fat should be less then 6%.
Salt should be 3 gram a day
Fibers 30-40 grams a day.
Take yoghurt and curd and other fermented food(they add good flora to your intestines).
In a week you would feel much better.
As per the query regarding gout get a serum uric acid test done along with vitamin D and serum calcium(would comment on that according to results).
Finally don't change things suddenly ....Gradually change your diet and give your body time to adapt to that.
Follow ups are welcome,
Thank you!

Thank you so much for breaking down a healthy diet - I will make sure to post this on my fridge for my family. To give you a bit more information; I am 39 years old, height is 5’2”, I weigh 112 lbs. and have maintained this weight since high school. My diet since about 20 has not changed significantly other than slowly cutting out more and more sugar and refined carbs. My bowel movements have been so regular for years but now, since early February just seem different and small and many more trips. If this changes anything please let me know. Now is not the time to go to the doctor just to check on things so I thought I would reach out- thank you!
