Question: Hello, thank you so much for your help. I was without my blood pressure medicine for about four days. I take lisinopril hctz 10-12.5. I just got it filled yesterday. Is it possible to develop heart failure in just four days of not taking this medicine? I have been on it for years, and generally take it everyday. Also, I thought I had a uti but the urinalysis and ct scan didn't show one. But I feel infected (been through it before) and I have tightness in chest with mild wheezing, and hip joint pain. I have some more to say but I'll let you answer these questions first. Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Heart failure usually takes years to develop.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Heart failure from high blood pressure would typically take years to develop, so I wouldn't be concerned about missing your medication for just a few days. Especially if you are not having any symptoms of heart failure, such as shortness of breath or swelling in your legs, I wouldn't be concerned.

I'm not sure what symptoms you are having that make you feel like you have an infection, but if the urinalysis did not show signs of a UTI, it would be unlikely that you have one. Occasionally vaginal infections can cause symptoms like a UTI, or if these symptoms persist, certain bladder syndromes should be considered.

As for the wheezing, if you have a history of asthma, you will likely need to use your inhaler, or if the wheezing and tightness if very bad, possibly steroids.

I don't know if the hip pain is chronic or not, if you would like to give me more information about it, and any questions about it, I would be glad to help anyway I can.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
