Question: Hello..my son is 8 yr old and disgnosed partial epilepsy..doc started with oxcarbezine.(.vinlep) but he got itching as side effect. Now doc suggested to stop immediately and switch to valperin 200 (4ml-4ml-7ml...weight is 25kg). And frisium 10mg for 2 week to take care of transition...

on asking if i could do valperin 2 times a day due to school etc..doc is suggesting valperin crono 300, 2 times a day ..i am confused if crono would be too much and i should stick to valperin syrup 200 and manage 3 times a day...

also in case some day i miss afternoon dose of valperin 200 syrup..will it create issues..

Brief Answer:
Your child is on correct treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your child's clinical details. Since your child developed allergy with vinlep (ozxcarbazepine), it had to be stopped.

Valparin (Valproate) is also a very good drug. The total dose of valparin per day ranges from 15 mg to 60 mg per kg body weight. As per your child's body weight, if 600 mg per day of valparin chrono is given, it would come to 24 mg per kg body weight, which is well within the accepted dose of valparin. Chrono preparation medicines work for a longer duration, and hence they need to be given only two times daily.

I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Brief Answer:
Sudden change can be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

1. Sudden change from valparin syrup to valparin chrono can be done, as both are same drugs (valproate)

2. Yes, give frisium for a few days.

3. Yes, valparin can also cause itching in some patients. if it happens, another drug would need to be given.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM
