Question: Hey, I was wondering if taking 2,000mg of Phytosterols every day will raise liver enzymes. I am mid forties and my LDL cholesterol has being slowly going up over the last few years and I changing my diet and wanted to take some supplements. Why I ask about raising liver enzymes is b/c I don't mind an alcoholic beverage every now and again and I have to watch my liver enzymes which are OK now but, I don't want to potentially affect my liver.

Brief Answer:
LDL can be reduced by life style changes. SGOT & PT by alcohol restriction

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Ask A Doctor forum.
The normal level for LDL is below 100 mg/dL.
Rising LDL level can be managed by life style management and diet control.
Liver enzymes which are affected by alcohol are SGOT and SGPT.
Abstinence from alcohol is the best way to reduce liver enzymes.
The normal level for SGOT and SGPT in adults is <50 IU/L.

Thanks and take care

I did not ask about liver enzymes and alcohol. I asked if taking Phytosterols would raise my liver enzymes independent of alcohol. Please don't dodge the question and answer my question. And I understand that lifestyle changes will affect LDL, but will taking Phytosterols raise my liver enzymes by themselves?
