Brief Answer:
Cough following viral infection is not uncommon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

Cough following viral infection is not uncommon. The presence of cough with mucus could be due to the inflamed sinuses. Do not worry if the colour of the mucus is whitish or yellowish. If the colour of the secretions is green or dark yellow, then it could be a sign of bacterial infection.

My suggestion to you is:
1. Drink frequent sips of warm water
2. Do steam inhalation 2-3 times a day for 3-5 minutes.
3. You can take over the counter medicines such as bromhexine relieve the cough and the mucus
4. Avoid coffee/chilled food and beverages/smoking/fizzy drinks (if any).

If the symptoms do not get better within 3-4 days, you should consult your doctor for a thorough evaluation and management.

Hope this answers your query; I would be available for the follow-up queries.
