Hey Doctor, Yesterday Morning About 12 Hours Ago I Stubbed

Question: Hey doctor,
Yesterday morning about 12 hours ago I stubbed my toe really hard on the side of my bed. It was pretty painful and hurt for quite a while but ended up subsiding a little. Then when I went to sleep I’ve woken up about 3-4 hours into my sleep with the pain in my toe quite painful again. How do I know if this is something more serious and if it’s broken? Usually most of the time once the pain dies down I don’t get it anymore but this time it’s come up again after I’ve gone to sleep is that normal when should I be worrying about this and how long does it take to heal if it were bruised or if it were broken?

Hello again XXXXXXX Welcome back to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through both the queries in details...
I can understand your concerns...
Well, it seems like a recent onset injury only...just keep observing the toe for any excessively increasing swelling/skin-nail discolouration in-and-around and any decreased sensation over the area...these are the most concerning symptoms which may indicate a deeper injury/underlying fracture...in that case, a prompt X-ray is needed along with an Orthopedic's review...
However, for now, I'd suggest to keep the feet elevated, stay rested, don't engage into any strenuous activities...
Start applying ice-pack over the area three to four times daily for the next 1-2 days...
For pain, taking round the clock pain-killer such as Acetaminophen/Tylenol (650mg three times daily after food) or Ibuprofen 400mg twice daily after food for the next 3-4 days would be beneficial...
However, if despite following these, there's a persistent increase in pain/any progressive swelling-redness/weakness then better not to wait any longer and get it examined by any Orthopedician along with getting the X-ray done...
As for the hit-injury to the throat(Adam's apple), just take steam inhalation twice daily and do luke-warm salt water gargling three times daily...give your voice some rest (talk at low pitch, and only when necessary for a day or two)...
-Please avoid smoking (if at all do) as it can further aggravate these symptoms...
-Drink plenty of water throughout the day, don't let the mouth/throat getting dry...Additionally, all the irritants need to be cut down from the diet as a priority, particularly excessive sour/pickle/deep fried foods for the time being...have plenty of semi-solid warm porridges, soups, broths to fasten the recovery...
The throat concern should be self-limiting with all these...
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take Care

Thanks for the reply and advice doctor, just one further thing i'd like to ask with my throat it seems to only hurt if I tilt my head up slightly and then swallow the pain is kind of where my thyroid is. It's like an aching type of feeling almost the same as like a bruise on your arm but it only hurts if I tilt my head up if I face down and swallow it doesn't hurt. How long would this kind of take to heal and at what point should I get it checked out?

Could I have possibly caught some sort of viral infection and it’s maybe just swollen nodes? I was in a crowd/moshpit with a lot of people in very close proximity.

Brief Answer:
just follow as already advised, let me know how you stay afterwards...
Detailed Answer:
Hey, Welcome back XXXXXXX
It'll get normalized, don't worry...
Since you hurt it during the moshpit (physical injury/hit from another one's elbow), I don't think any new onset viral infection or swollen nodes just develop out of it during this time...
Relax!! Just follow all the advice (Including the modified diets as already mentioned) given earlier and let me know how you stay afterwards...
It should be getting better after following the advice within another 24-48hrs only...if at all you notice any sudden hoarseness of voice, breathing difficulty, extreme difficulty in swallowing liquids as well solids, then only it needs to be checked out...
Take Care
Kind Regards

Hey doctor,
I’ve still had a bit of pain in that toe and I’ve attached some images but there’s this weird purple wash on the top side and on the bottom side there’s a red rash, is this normal following hitting it or is it something I should get looked at?
Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
the pain will subside, don't worry...
Detailed Answer:
Hey Welcome back XXXXXXX
I've checked both the images...
I can appreciate a small hematoma/bruise over the toe (that's not a rash, it generally happens due to small micro-vascular injury after the hit-incident)...It'd subside over another few days (may take up to 6-7days at the max)...
Keep the area open and don't scratch it otherwise it may increase...Avoid putting any heavy pressure on the feet during this time...
Just continue applying ice/cold compression for another 24hrs...
Now, for the bottom part, since there was already a cut, you can apply some antiseptic ointment twice daily (eg. 10% Betadine/Povidone Iodine wound care twice daily for 3-4 days)... Keep the area dry, keep it uncovered, and avoid any form of strenuous activities for the next few days...
This should be enough to heal it...Don't worry...
