Hi - I Am Switching From 50 Mg Of Zoloft

Question: Hi - I am switching from 50 mg of zoloft to 10 mg of celexa due to sexual side effects of zoloft.

I haven't gotten clear instructions from the doctor about how to make the transition without having the most withdrawal. I know they are both small doses so I am not sure exactly how to go about it.

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
You can just switch to the new SSRI medication

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'.

As you say, these are small doses, and so, especially since they both are similar medications (called SSRI medications), I would say the best and simplest approach would be to just stop the zoloft and start the celexa. You would be unlikely to experience any side effects or withdrawal with this. Another option would be to decrease to half a tab of zoloft (25 mg) and start a half a tab of celexa (5 mg) for 2 weeks before switching to the full dose of celexa and stopping the zoloft. Either method would be reasonable, but I would recommend just switching.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
