Hi- I’m 30 Years Old, And I’ve Been On Nexplanon

Question: Hi- I’m 30 years old, and I’ve been on Nexplanon for three months. I’ve had the usual long bouts of spotting. Most recently, I experienced some pelvic pain/pressure that I felt in the front, as well as in my lower back. It was very tender to lift my legs even when walking. It lasted one day, and I feel totally better today. Should I have an exam done to see if there is a cyst or does this sound fairly common? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
There is no need to see the doctor as long as the pain is gone

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

The pain you describe does not seem to be related to Nexplanon use. Constipation may also cause similar symptoms as you explained and this can be the case especially if you have had difficult bowel movement recently.

Also, because the pain is better now, there is no need to see your doctor at the moment and you should just keep an eye on it.

If the pain comes back, it may still be due to a usual condition such as constipation but it is best to have a visit with your doctor.

A thorough abdominal examination and possibly a gynecological exam and a transvaginal ultrasound may be indicated in this case.

To conclude:
- I do not think the pain you had is related to Nexplanon use
- a more common condition such as constipation can be the cause
- it is best to keep an eye on the symptoms and if the pain comes back or you have any other complaints it is best to see your doctor and possibly have some tests and examinations.

I hope this is helpful. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
