Question: Hi Baby is 17 months old . He fell from high chair by standing on it and losing control. I did not see him falling, but when I tried examining the swelling in his head and body. I found his left side of the head swollen and his face closer to ear swollen. He cried out of pain for around 2 hours then took a small nap of 15 min. However soon after falling baby was not having complete balance while left on the floor. He was very dull with his eyes partially open and was not okay to walk. Now he is doing okay but he is touching his head and cries ( not with the same intensity as before). But he still feels the pain and there is good swelling.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I understand your concern

Fall from a chair usually will not cause significant internal head injury in a child. If there was no loss of consciousness or recurrent vomiting following fall, we need not worry now.

The pain and swelling suggests a contusion there. Apply ice every few hours for next 48 hours- this will hasten resolution. For pain, give him Paracetamol suspension(250mg/5ml) 3ml every 8 hours for 2-3 days.

We have to watch him for next 24 hours for any signs of head injury- progressive drowsiness, recurrent vomiting, or abnormal movement/posturing of limbs(suggesting seizure). If any such symptoms, take him to emergency room without delay. Otherwise we need not worry. As he is active now, the initial transient dullness is unlikely significant, and may be from the constant crying.
