several possible causes, please see the detailed answer below...
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concerns...
Could you please let me know if it's involving both the ankles or any particular one?
Was there any history of recent trauma/injury to the lower-leg area?
Is there any redness/itching or any other complain along with the swelling?
Please note at the age of 39, it could be due to anywhere from any nutritional deficiency, anaemia (low haemoglobin levels), secondary to some kind of trauma/injury, some underlying liver, heart or kidney diseases, any partial/temporary blockage of the lymphatic systems of the lower leg, venous insufficiency causing pooling of blood to the lower leg and several others.
The only way to ascertain the diagnosis is by getting a thorough clinical check-up by a physician, along with a few investigations (i.e. Hemogram, ESR, LFT, Electrolytes, KFT, Thyroid function, RBS, and if suspected any venous insufficiency then lower limb colour doppler study)...Treatment/management can be done based on the findings...
None of this is any major concern if diagnosed in time and quite well manageable condition, so please don't worry, simply get yourself checked-up by the physician and proceed accordingly.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take Care
Kind Regards
