Question: Hi Doc, I frequently have throat pain, sore throat and other throat issues like cough and phlegm since the last few years. It comes and goes and is usually triggered by the consumption of cold or oily food.

Also, last few years i have been travelling and have spent winters in colder countries like the USA and UK. During the winters here i have experienced specks of blood along with mucus from the nose and sometimes also in the phlegm I spit out when I clear my throat.

Should i be worried? What could be the possible reasons for the above? I am in UK for the next few months and would like to avoid visiting a doctor here, unless its really necessary. Are there any home remedies i could do for the next few months until i get back to India?

I dont smoke. I drink ocassionaly.

Brief Answer:
May be due to cold, dry air or nasal congestion.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I can understand your concern. Here is my advice.

As per your history, it may be due cold, dry environment and Nasal congestion. Don't worry.

Usually cold and dry air causes dryness of nose which damage nose’s blood vessels, so there isn’t enough moisture.

This may cause bleeding on nose blowing and sometimes blood in phlegm due to nasal bleeding.

During nasal bleed, press nose firmly and take breath by mouth and slightly bend forward in sitting position.

To get relief, you can use nasal saline drops. Apply petroleum Jelly inside the nose by cotton swab.

Add moisture in air with help of humidifier. Avoid nose picking or nose piercing.

For sore throat do saline water gargle or Betadine gargles. Take steam inhalation.

Avoid cold and oily food. Take hygienic food and water. Keep your self warm.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Thank you.

Regards,
Dr Shyam Kale.
