Hi Doc, My 3 Month Old Daughter Is On Formula
My 3 month old daughter is on formula due to inadequate breast milk formation (approx. 80% of feed is formula based). She passes gas after every meal and also shows sign of irritation at times. Sometimes she also pukes curdy milk from mouth (couple of occasions she had milk coming out her nose too). She is on Nestle Nan Pro-1 for feed.
Should I be concerned about this or is this normal?
Regards,
Vivek
Nothing to worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service
I have gone through your query and understand your concern
But there is nothing to worry here.
It is common for babies to pass gas/stools after each feeds- this is from physiological gastro-colic reflex, and can be taken as normal.
Occasional vomiting of feeds is also normal(curdy appearance is because it is partially digested milk). This is called physiological gastro-esophageal reflex, and is from immaturity of the lower esophageal sphincter. As the babies grows older(by 6-8 months of age), the sphincter will get tight and vomiting will stop.
Until then, few measures can offer some relief- always feed in sitting position, burp on the back of baby for 15 minutes after each feeds, and avoid laying down the baby soon after the feed. This reduces frequency of vomiting.
Also, always give breast milk before formula to completely empty both breasts- this will gradually improve milk output. Use formula only as a top-up after both breasts are empty.
I hope this answer will help
