Hi Doc, My Name Is Lidya. I%E2%80%99ve Been In Quarantine
My name is Lidya. I%E2%80%99ve been in quarantine for 6 week, so I don%E2%80%99t understand why I always feel exhausted, fatigued, unable to focus, anxious, sometimes feeling cold. I was thinking maybe it%E2%80%99s due to iron deficiency. I would love to get my iron levels checked. Is there a way to do it without going to the hospital/doctor office?
Thank you.
There are no means to check serum Iron levels at home.
Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.
There can be multiple reasons of your symptomatology.
Fatigue and exhaustion of your's might be due to over stress and anxiety,as you have been through a long quarantine period during the globally evolving COVID 19 scenario.
In such patients, other causes which need to be ruled out are anaemia, diabetes, alcohol abuse, hormonal imbalance, electrolyteimbalance, kidney disease and liver disease.
Yes....anaemia might have such a presentation.
There may or may not be associated pallor, breathlessness (on exertion),palpitations, pedal edema in anaemia.
Unfortunately, there is no method of checking serum iron levels with out visiting a hospital/laboratory or calling someone from there to collect your blood samples.
You can make some dietary modifications with increased intake of green leafy vegetables, millet, jaggery, fruits like pomegranate, organ meat etc.
Avoid alcohol.
You can also take commercially available preparations of iron and vitamin C (required for the absorption of iron in the gut).
As soon as the COVID 19 scenario improves, you can visit your clinician for complete evaluation, clinical examination and blood work.
Hope that I have answered your query.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
