Hi Doc My Son Is 25 Old. His Birth Weight
![default](/r/images/default.png)
my son is 25 old. His birth weight was 3.5 kg and had jaundice for which we gave him photo therapy and now it’s settled. From past 1 week he is crying continuously and not sleeping during day time nor in the night time continuously he is awake and he cries. We have started giving him colicaid drops have completed 2 doses of 2 drops each. He is super drowsy after that And he will not wake up atleast for 6 to 7 hrs.
Now he is on neopeptine and vitazyme twice a day .
Concern is we checked his fever in normal digital thermometer and it shows 98.4 and he seems little warm. We checked it in the armpit.
Please advice what is the normal temperature for a 25 day old new born and can we consider the reading of 98.4 normal or its fever. Also advice what shud be give
Thanks
Regards

98.4 f is absolutely normal temperature
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for asking on this platform
I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
You need not to worry as 98.6 Fahrenheit temperature is absolutely normal. Normal body temperature ranges from 97.6 to 99.5 degrees.
You may find that the head of baby is warmer and its quite common. Actually the surface area of head in infant is larger in comparison to older children and adults. So the heat loss is more from the head which gives a warmer feel compare to other body parts. That is why it is recommended to check body temperature by putting thermometer in axilla, oral cavity or in rectum.
Now coming to excessive crying. This also is very common and I won't get worried if baby is otherwise active, passing urine and taking feeds well. Excessive crying can be due to poor adaptation in external environment from intrauterine life, changing melatonin hormone level in process of maintaining sleep cycle, wet diaper, for feeds or due to colic.
It is unlikely to feel drowsy after having Colicaid but still if you have noticed that then better to avoid the same. I would like to start Lactobacillus reuteri (Biogaia Protectis drops) 5 drops a day. It is found to be very effective for colic in a recent research study. Give vitamin d supplements in from of drops 400 u per day as per recommendation from XXXXXXX academy of pediatrics and XXXXXXX academy of pediatrics.
Burping after each feed helps in better nursing and decrease colic too.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.

The baby is 25 days old he has been lathergic from last evening meaning 24 hrs now almost. And his legs and hands are also warm and not just his head .
Also I have noticed his right leg is shivering a bit during fed I can feel that but can’t see the movement which kind of a movement it is .
Also he has been urinating in every 2.5 hrs mostly.
He is taking little deep breaths than before and while feeding he feels chills.
Please advice if cold is related to the movement of the leg and can we give calpol of drops for fever and how long does it take to settle

Shivering is common, don't give calpol if oral or axillary temp is normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Shivering is common in neonate and is called jitteriness.
I don't suggest you to give calpol unless the recorded axillary or oral temperature goes beyond 99.5 degree Fahrenheit.
Passing urine every 2.5 hrs too is normal.
Again I won't get overly worried if baby is feeding well and measured temp is not high.
I think you should continue giving routine care to the baby and observe closely. If still you are worried you can consult your nearest pediatrician.

I have a follow up question
My son has severe colic pain he is on breast feed plus formula called apatamil.
Vitazyme is making him too drowsy. Can we give colicaid for 3 to 4 days continuously and in what dosage ?
Also he spits milk even after 45 Min of feeding all of a sudden and that’s not cuddled milk it’s more milk.
Also there is a concern it feels like he has lot of mucus/ cough in his throat as we get to hear a lot of hoarse voice and specially post evening and in the night we can feel like there is lot of mucus accumulated in his throat.
Due to the condition around we cannot take him to the doc, please advice if anythg needs to be given for his mucus or cough

Can stop vitazyme, Colicaid can be given, burp properly
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for follow up
Vitazyme contains probiotic lactobacillus acidophilus and diastase. Although I don't think this vitazyme is making him drwosy. But if you think so better stop it. As mentioned earlier lactobacillus reuteri present in Biogaia Protectis works best in colic.
Mixed feed increases the risk of regurgitation. I request you to burp him properly after each feed. You can give junior lanzol( lansoprazole) for regurgitation. The dose for him will be 1/5 th tablet a day. It's a dispersible tablet so you can make a solution of 2.5 ml and then give 0.5 ml a day.
Mucus can be due to regurgitation itself or poor swallowing of saliva. You can use suction bulb to clear the secretion. Suction should be done before feed to avoid the gag reflex and vomiting.
If you find that the symptoms persist even after taking all these measures or if baby is developing any breathing difficulty, please take him to the pediatrician.
I hope this helps.
I shall be glad to help further if you need any.

Give lansoprazole, can try changing formula
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I won't get worried if the amount of vomits is not large. Small amount of regurgitation is common in this age. As mentioned earlier giving lansoprazole will help. You can try changing formula like enfamil or nan pro. Continue giving neopeptin, Biogaia Protectis and vitamin d.
These measures will help.

No need to worry, continue probiotic
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I can understand your concern.
I hope changing formula will help here. Although constitution of all the formula milks are almost same still changing to a different formula helps in most cases. You can switch to any other be it enfamil or nan pro. Personally I suggest Enfamil. Increased gas production and smelly stool can be due to poor absorption of lactose. Giving probiotics helps here. Continue giving Biogaia Protective. Few episodes of loose stool as this is quite common in this age. I won't get overly worried if baby is otherwise active and passing urine frequently.
If you notice too frequent watery stools, poor feeding, blood in stool or decreased frequency of urination please consult your pediatrician.
Please let me know if you have other concerns.
