Hi Doctor I Am 41 Years Old Male And Yesterday
Question: Hi Doctor
I am 41 Years old male and yesterday I slipped from my Stairs due to which my Left forarm got abrasions . Due to lockdown our maid is not coming and since last 2 months dirt has accumlated on the stairs . Due to pain it took me 5-10 minutes to get up and after that I went to bathroom and washed the whole area with soap. Post that I applied Hand santitizer on the whole area. Next morning i.e. today I also applied dettol liquid on that area and rubbed with the help of cotton. Althogh I can see Red abrasions on the skin there was no blood drooling out as such. However I have read about Sepsis just like that on Google and it got m e worried if I can get sepsis like this. I am attaching photographs of my forearm. By the way it has been 24 hours and till now I am symptomess and normal. Can those 5-10 minutes delay on the stairs had given bacteria enough time to enter my body or 10 minutes delay is ok after which I applied soap and Hand sanitizer. Thanks

Brief Answer:
You will not go for sepsis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have gone through your photographs.
It is a very minor superficial abrasions and you will not go to sepsis because of it. It is look like a healing one and there is no obvious signs of infection as well.
It will be heal by itself in few days, and you can wash with soap and water and keep the wound open. If available you can apply over the counter available topical antibiotics like mupirocin over the wound(it is not a must).
The ten minutes time delay does not have any impact in the recovery.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks

Sir so are you saying that For sepesis to occur the wound has to be deep and not superficial. Also let's say if I were to get sepsis from this wound(or deeper wound for that matter) how much time it would take for sepsis symptoms to show up. I mean to say if I am symptomless for more then 48 hours is it enough to conclude that if I had septecmeia due to bacteria entering the wound symptoms would have shown by now or is 72 hours conclusive to get a psychological satisfaction. What's the XXXXXXX time by which bacteria entering the blood would show symptoms of immune respinse
Brief Answer:
There is no definite time frame to exclude sepsis.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Sepsis generally develops in patients with major traumatic wound as in case of road traffic accidents or following a major surgery. It can also develop in patients with low immunity.
Mere entry of the pathogen to the body does not leads to septicaemia.
There are clinical signs and laboratory parameters to detect sepsis.
In your case the odds for going for sepsis is very very low. Also there is no definite time frame to exclude sepsis.
Avoid unwanted stress and anxiety.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks

Thanks a lot sir. As you can understand its more to do with stress and anxiety . but you mentioned one very surprising fact that mere entry of bacteria into blood does not lead to sepsis but isn't this what will happen in case of road accident also. So let's say the bacteria did enter through my blood are you saying body will block this immediately from multiplying because otherwise will it not spread to all organs through blood???
Brief Answer:
For minor wound, the bacterial load will be low
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
In minor wounds, the pathogen load will be low and the immune system will easily handle the pathogen.
In major trauma, the body will be a compensated stage with the weakening of multiple organ dysfunction so it can not handle the high burden of the infection. Many factors influence the development of sepsis.
In an immunocompromised patient, even a small wound can cause complications.
Thanks
