Hi Doctor, I Was Bitten By A Dog On November

Question: Hi Doctor, I was bitten by a dog on November 7, 2019. On that very same day, I took the first dose of anti-rabies vaccine. My second dose of vaccine was scheduled on November 10 but unfortunately I missed it due to unavailability of the vaccine. Now, this is my question. I want to restart the vaccination schedule from the beginning. Can I do it or will it have any adverse effect ? Is there any harm in doing so? Please suggest.

Hi...
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.
As you had a breach in your vaccine prophylaxis, according to Internationally accepted policy and procedure, you have to restart the entire course of the vaccine from the first dose.
There are no adverse effects of restarting, rather it will produce the optimum immunity.
You should do it without any worries about any side effects.
This time, don't be a defaulter and make sure that you take the vaccines as per schedule.
Hope that I have answered your query.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.

Thank you for your advice, doctor. I have one more question for you. I am on medication for anxiety disorder (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). I have read at a few places that having some medicines while taking anti-rabies vaccines can reduce the human body's ability to produce enough immunity to fight the deadly disease. In short, it can suppress immunity.
The two tablets that I am taking are Lorazepam (1 MG) and Flutop 20.
Can I continue taking these medicines or stop for the next 28 days while I am taking 5 doses of anti-rabies vaccine?

Welcome back.....
You are right in that Rabies vaccine has some significant drug interactions reported with many drugs.
There are no clinically significant interactions known between it and Lorazepam/Fluoxetine but it would be better if you consult your primary clinician too.
Warm regards.

To be on the safer side, I will not take the mentioned tablets until I finish the entire course of my anti-rabies vaccination.
So, just to wrap it up, I have to start the vaccination schedule from the first dose and it will be on the following days: 0,3,7,14 and 28. Am I correct? Will I be safe from rabies post taking these vaccines?
Also, I want to ask a question that isn't related to me. My daughter of about 2 years is discharging mucus from both her eyes. In the morning, her eyes were swollen, too. Can you recommend an eye drop for her?

Rabies prophylaxis
Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Yes...You are right.
Restart the vaccination afresh and as per schedule i.e day 0,3,714 and 28.
It will provide you with the required immunity and will give you postexposure prophylaxis against rabies.
As far as your daughter is concerned, she might be having an eye infection which usually presents as pain, irritation, gritting sensation and discharge.
She should clean her eyes repeatedly with running water and can put a couple of antibiotic drops like Moxifloxacin every 6 hourly.
An ophthalmologist should be consulted if the problem persists.
Happy living.

As you have not received the proper dose of vaccine due to spillage, hence
you should restart the vaccination schedule afresh.
Today's dose would be as null and void and would not be counted.
You need not worry....Restarting a new schedule would not cause any harm to you.
Regards.

Hi Doctor,
As suggested, I started my anti-rabies vaccination from the beginning today. But, the nurse who was administering me the vaccine, spilled about 30 percent of the vaccine while reconstituting it.
Now, here is my question. I want to restart the vaccination process from the beginning as it wasn't administered properly today. Is there any harm in restarting the anti-rabies vaccination process from the beginning and counting today's dose as null and void? Please suggest as I am very worried.
