Question: Hi Doctor,
May daughter is 2.5 yrs old. She was having fever for 1-2 days, cough and runny nose around 1 week back. Then in between she was ok and now, she again has runny nose and a bit of cough. We have given her 5 ml Alerid today.

What shall we do? We have Sinarest - AF available at home if that can be given in this condition. If yes, please suggest the dosage.
Please suggest any other medicine to make her feel better. thanks.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Give steam inhalation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. It is advisable to give some antiallergic once daily for next few days and Alerid will serve the purpose. Sinarest AF will do the exact same thing and therefore is not needed. Just continue with Alerid since it is slightly better.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. Other medicines will not help.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Regards
