Hi Doctor, My 3 Year Old Daughter Used To Eat

My 3 year old daughter used to eat a ton of yogurt and was taking very high doses of probiotics off and on. I had no idea they could be bad for you. Her stools are sometimes covered with mucus. I am terrified that she has SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overload) or a bacterial infection in her intestines. Please help me. I am attaching a picture for your review. She has always had some mucus either in or around her stool. If you zoom into the picture you can see globs of mucus and a thin coating of mucus encoating the entire stool. On the underside of her stool (not visible in the picture there was also a thin covering of mucus).
Get a stool culture test done.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have reviewed your query viewed her stools picture and here is my advice.
Firstly sir I can't understand why at such a tender age of 3 your daughter is having probiotics.I understand that probiotics are good but they are meant for those who either have some digestive problem etc especially in pediatrics age group. At such a young age the kid already has a lots of good bacteria's and yeast and I won't recommend her to take any further probiotics or any supplements.
Secondly see our gut for e.g contains colonies of bacteria called E.coli normally it lives in body as a commensal and does not cause any harm to it but once the number exceeds the desired quantity patient becomes sick(just an example). So yes very likely it's SIBO and get a stool culture test done to find out.
Secondly sir when ever there is a overgrowth of bacteria in gut it causes inflammation of intestine. This results in secretion of lagre amount of mucuos(as a result of inflammation) hence mucuos is not a problem.
Get a culture test done.
Give her a course of Metronidazole with ciprofloxacin as prescribed by your primary and she would be fine.
Hope I was helpful,
Thanks!
