Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 1 year 7 months old.
She was having runny nose and fever on 2nd August evening and we had given calpol drops. We took her to doctor on 4th Aug and he said that it is viral fever and will last for approx. 5 days.

We have given her following medicines as prescribed by doctor:
1. Meftal-P 5 ml in case of high fever every 8 hours
2. Calpol drops 1.8 ml 6 hourly in case fever comes back before 8 hours and we had already given Meftal-P within 8 hours
3. Maxtra 2.5 ml 3 times a day for runny nose

The fever was there on 5th day (7th Aug) as well so we took her to doctor again and doctor prescribed Syrup Azithral 200 mg 3 ml once daily for 5 days. Yesterday (11th Aug) was 5th day for Azithral. She was having fever yesterday night as well approx. 99.5 F and we again gave her calpol drops 1.8 ml.
Right now (12th Aug) she is having 101.3 F fever. Please suggest what shall we do. Fever started on 2nd Aug as explained above. Though she was not having fever from 7th Aug evening till yesterday.

Brief Answer:
Possibly a case of reinfection. Wait and watch. No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Since the fever had resolved and have recurred, possibly this is a case of reinfection, and possibly viral in nature. As of now I would insist you to give the previous medication (Meftal P, Calpol and Maxtra) and to wait and watch. If the fever lasts, it would still be a good idea to go for a widal test and get enteric fever excluded.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
